Guidance for the Uncoachable
As a kid, I was un-coachable. When a teacher or a parent or a friend or, yes, even a coach offered a bit helpful criticism or advice, I simply shut it out and shut down.
Being a typically socialized female of the 80s, I never said "Don't tell me what to do!" or rebelled outwardly at all. I nodded and close-lipped smiled. But inside, I burned and raged and thought "La la la la la! Not listening! You're not in charge of me!"
To be honest, not much has changed. While I like to think I'm now more open to others' wisdom, I'm still allergic to certainty and didactic instruction.
So how have I convinced my stubborn little brain to accept new and vital information, especially information that affects the health and happiness of my family? The secret is in how the information is presented.
Here's my freebie for you today - my top 10 books - in the categories of mindfulness, parenting philosophy, and more - that offer reframes rather than instructions, inspiration rather guidelines. They've helped me feel more autonomous and authentic, rather than criticized and controlled.
So, my fellow un-coachable rebels who also value learning and connection... which of these books are you most drawn to? Or if you don't like learning from books, just say "La la la! Not listening!" It's all welcome here.
Warmly,
